Healthy Portable Snacks: Top Picks for On-the-Go Kids & Adults
Nutritious and Allergy-Friendly Packaged Snacks for School, Sports, and Beyond
As a mom and registered dietitian, I’m always on the hunt for the best portable snacks to fuel my 7- and 4-year-old, whether it’s after school, on the go, or during their sports activities. While I’m a big fan of fresh fruit (my kids devour it in massive quantities!), sometimes I need something that’s more convenient and packaged for school and sports functions.
Fresh fruit is always my go-to when we’re at home—though I must admit, my 4-year-old has developed a habit of helping herself to apples from the refrigerator and leaving apple cores in secret spots all around the house. But as any busy parent knows, there are times when fresh fruit just doesn’t cut it, especially when snacks need to be portable, shelf-stable, and easy to distribute at school or sports events.
Here are a few of my favorite packaged snack foods that I love to keep on hand. These are perfect for taking to school, sporting functions, or just having at the house for a quick and easy snack:
1. MadeGood Granola Minis
MadeGood is one of my go-to brands for so many reasons. Their snack foods are perfect for sharing at parties and sports events because they’re food allergy-friendly. MadeGood products are nut-free, vegan (dairy-free), and gluten-free, making them a great option when you’re considering the diverse dietary needs of others. It’s tough enough for kids with food allergies to feel excluded from social eating occasions, so when possible, it’s nice to provide an option that everyone can enjoy. MadeGood Granola Minis come in individual packets, making them ideal for on-the-go snacking, and they’re packed with nutrients sourced from vegetables—so you get a bit of a hidden health boost, too!
2. That’s It Mini Fruit Bars
Sometimes, simple is best. That’s It fruit bars contain just two ingredients—fruit, and that’s it! These bars are a fantastic quick-carbohydrate snack for sports, recess, or any on-the-go activity. With no added sugars or artificial ingredients, they provide a clean source of energy. Plus, they’re manufactured free of the top allergens, making them a safe and thoughtful choice for team or classroom settings where food allergies are a concern. Throw a few in your bag for an easy, natural snack that your kids will love.
3. Nature’s Garden Probiotic Yoggies
If your kids love gummy snacks but you’re looking for a healthier alternative, Nature’s Garden Probiotic Yoggies are a fantastic option. These little yogurt-covered fruit snacks are sweet, fun to eat, and contain 3 grams of fiber per serving—making them a much better choice than traditional gummy candies. The added probiotics also provide a digestive health benefit, making them a win-win for both parents and kids. They come in individual packets, so they’re perfect for school lunches or a quick snack between activities.
4. Individual Popcorn Bags
Popcorn is one of my favorite snack alternatives to chips. It’s a whole grain, provides fiber, and still satisfies that craving for a salty crunch. Unlike chips, popcorn offers some nutritional benefits while still being fun to eat. My personal favorite brand is Lesser Evil, which offers organic popcorn in a variety of flavors, but Wegman’s also has a great store-brand option that comes in individual bags. These are perfect for bringing to sports events or class parties, offering a healthier option that still feels like a treat.
What I Look for in Packaged Snacks:
When I’m selecting packaged snacks for my kids, their classmates, or their sports teams, I’m always considering a few key factors to make sure I’m making the best choice possible. Here’s what I keep in mind:
1. How much added sugar does it contain?
I try to limit added sugars wherever possible, especially when I know my kids will be snacking frequently throughout the day. Snacks that are lower in sugar help to avoid energy crashes and promote sustained energy.
2. Does it contain any protein?
Protein is an important part of balanced snacking, helping to keep my kids full and satisfied until the next meal. I look for snacks that have a bit of protein to support their growth and energy needs.
3. Does it contain any fiber?
Fiber is crucial for healthy digestion and helps keep hunger at bay. Snacks with added fiber are always a bonus, as many traditional snacks are lacking in this important nutrient.
4. Is it allergy-friendly?
With food allergies on the rise, it’s important to consider snacks that are safe for everyone, especially when bringing them to group settings like schools or sports teams. I try to avoid snacks that contain any of the top allergens (such as nuts, dairy, or gluten) to ensure that all kids can enjoy them safely.
By keeping these factors in mind, I’m able to make more informed decisions about what snacks I’m offering to my kids and their friends. Healthy snacks don’t have to be complicated—they just need to provide the right balance of nutrients to keep everyone fueled and happy throughout the day.
