The Well has been quiet for bit, due in part to juggling responsibilities and allowing time to assess the publication’s direction. In the future, you can expect the same coverage on trending nutrition, health and sustainability topics at least once a month. Additionally, we’re debuting a new feature that includes meal ideas along with an organizational grocery list. These simple recipe ideas are designed to inspire behavior change around preparing and organizing meal planning in your household. Growing into New Habits
Growth happens throughout life, situations, health and age are consistently changing.
I was reminded of this when I attended the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists annual conference in Baltimore, Maryland, last month. I heard Dr. Heidi Grant, a social psychologist studying leadership and motivation, speak about growth mindset. She focused on how we can better prepare ourselves for successful behavioral changes by aiming to not be “good” but to “get better”.
This requires shifting your thought away from a fixed mindset, which makes you question if your goal is possible, and adopting a growth mindset, which focuses on always improving yourself. This can be as simple as changing narrative language around a behavior from “I’m not good at [insert goal or objective]” to “I’m not good at [insert goal or objective] yet.” The small addition of the word yet at the end of an aspirational goal makes all the difference, and it’s supported by research that says those with a growth mindset are more likely to achieve the goals they set.
So, the next time you think you don’t have the ability to achieve your next goal, just remind yourself that you don’t have the ability yet, but you will if you change your mindset.
